For 100 years we have been a leader in sexual and reproductive healthcare. In 2026, the people we care for and the services we offer are much broader than when we started. Through our centenary year we will celebrate 100 years of healthcare and explore how over this century our work has grown to include and prioritise
During our centenary we’ll be celebrating with the communities we care for, exploring our history and looking toward the next 100 years of advancing lifelong sexual and reproductive healthcare and rights.

Beginning with a team of volunteers and a 500-pound allowance, we started the reproductive and sexual health discussion in Australia.

We opened Australia’s first birth control clinic in Martin Place, Sydney and we lodged our patent application for the diaphragm.

We introduced sex education courses in NSW.

We expanded with two more clinics in Newcastle and Chippendale, Sydney.

We made the first oral contraceptive available in Australia and rebranded as Family Planning Association of Australia.

New clinics opened in baby health centres across NSW, as well as on City Road where we started providing vasectomies.

We established the Family Planning Telephone Information and Counselling service, introduced nurse practitioner training, Developed the ‘Feeling Sexy Feeling Safe’ disability project empowering people with disability to make independent decisions around their sexuality.

We created the youth-focused ‘Fact and Fantasy File’, which was a diary filled with information about sex, relationships and health.

We opened our Ashfield and Dubbo clinics and we supported the LGBTQ+ community by participating in Mardi Gras in 2008 and 2011.

We led the NSW Pro-Choice Alliance in the successful campaign to decriminalise abortion in NSW.

FPA’s clinics provide an important service that can be hard to find elsewhere – they love teaching and learning from colleagues in research, education, health promotion and policy/advocacy and media. I am so proud to have been part of a team that works to give everyone a fair go when it comes to reproductive and sexual health both in Australia and abroad.
